 A Welcome Return, Indeed!

Mazda’s iconic rotary engine is returning with the launch of the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV after 11 years. On June 22nd, 2023, production officially began at Mazda’s Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima, Japan, for the European market. This marks an exciting moment for car enthusiasts as Mazda looks to return its classic and beloved rotary engine to the automotive world again.

The Mazda MX-30 R-EV—announced earlier this year—is now being brought into existence and will bring a unique twist to Mazda’s lineup when it goes on sale this fall in Europe. This hybrid vehicle combines an electric powertrain with Mazda’s rotary engine, making it one of the most exciting vehicles on the market. We look forward to seeing what this new hybrid version will bring. Although we have yet to determine if and when the R-EV variant will be released to the U.S. market, we will surely see exciting new developments.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

The R-EV model offers up to 53 miles of range on a single charge and can be supplemented with additional power from the rotary engine when needed. The rotary engine is positioned next to the generator and motor in the engine bay. The 17.8kw battery and 50-liter fuel tank make a great team, giving the vehicle a total range of 373 miles., while acceleration performance is improved compared to the fully-electric version. With this latest addition, Mazda continues to provide drivers with more eco-friendly options.

Drive Modes

The Mazda MX-30 R-EV provides drivers with three distinct driving modes. Normal mode allows for a combination of electric and rotary engine power when more power is needed than the battery can supply. EV mode keeps the driver in electric drive until the battery runs out. Charge mode manages the battery charge level to ensure a certain amount of electric power is always available and offers drivers an additional layer of assurance when operating their vehicles in zero-emissions urban environments. By setting the reserve battery charge level, the driver can be sure they won’t get stuck with no power should their battery run low while on the road. With these features, the MX-30 R-EV offers flexibility and convenience for drivers looking for an eco-friendly ride.
