The Human-Car Connection Is Ever-Evolving at Mazda

One aspect of the Mazda brand that stands out is our constant desire to create and enhance the connection between a driver and their vehicle. Our emphasis on a human-centric design takes Mazda cars to the next level and creates a driving experience unlike any other. Recently, Mazda designers brought us the Dimming Turn Signals (DTS), which replicate a human heartbeat. Let’s take a look!

Driving can be a stressful experience at times, and this innovation was created partly to create a greater sense of peace on the road. This new turn signal appears instantly and then slowly dims, which makes the same feeling you would get from a human heartbeat. On the other hand, standard LED turn signals blink and turn off quickly, which can produce a harsher, more aggressive feeling.

Atushi Yoshida, Mazda Designer and Lamp Development Leader, said of this design inspiration, “I focused on how a driver’s intention emanates from their heart, extending to their heartbeat and pulse. Then, using an electrocardiogram, I watched heartbeat waveforms undulate, linger, and diminish, resulting in a turn signal that expresses the warmth lacking in LED lamps.”

Yoshida revealed that it took him and his team two years to bring their vision to life. Greatness doesn’t come quickly, and Yoshida and his team’s hard work further proves Mazda’s commitment to creating the best vehicles and technologies possible. The initial plan for integration did not meet the standards the team knew they could reach, which caused a delay. The headlights were going to be installed in the Mazda3, but they dimmed inconsistently, which caused Mazda to cancel the installation at the time. Working with Mazda engineers and Stanley Electric Co., their supplier, they carefully readjusted the light in 0.01-second increments until it reached the highest standards. At this point, they went ahead and installed the light in the 2023 Mazda CX-30.

There is so much innovation in the world of cars these days.

Yoshida elaborated on this fact, saying, “I want to help increase Mazda design value through lighting. Although competition is intensifying with electric cars and autonomous driving, I want to see outstanding car design continue without compromise.”

This beautifully captures the idea that we aren’t the only brand to grow and advance, but we always pay extra attention to the little things and always will.

DTS was not easy for the brand to take on, but they did it. Mazda not only realized that the driving experience could be improved through small details, but they went ahead and did something about it, something pretty remarkable. We are proud to represent such a creative brand full of hard-working individuals who refuse to settle for anything less than perfection. As a result, your driving experience should be unique, and Mazda continues to ensure that you and your car will form a special connection that makes you excited to get on your ride and go.
